Blank sheet music paper to print, free

Choose a layout, a clef and a paper size, and download a clean PDF of blank staff paper ready to print. Staff only, staff with tab, tab only or grand staff: the generator covers what guitarists, pianists and composition students actually use. It is free, unlimited and needs no account.

Four layouts for four jobs

Each layout answers a different need, so pick the one that matches what you are about to write:

LayoutBest for
Staff paperMelodies, dictation, theory homework, any single-line instrument
Staff + tabGuitar parts where you want both the pitch and the string and fret
Tab onlyRiffs and solos you will read on the guitar, chord-by-chord ideas
Grand staffPiano, harp, arranging, harmony exercises in four voices

You can also choose treble clef, bass clef or no clef, the number of staves per page, A4 or US Letter, and optional title and composer lines at the top. Leaving the clef off is handy when the same sheet will serve several instruments, or when you want students to draw the clef themselves.

Reading the staff: a quick refresher

A staff has five lines and four spaces. In the treble clef the lines read E, G, B, D, F from bottom to top and the spaces spell F, A, C, E. In the bass clef the lines are G, B, D, F, A and the spaces A, C, E, G. Middle C sits on one ledger line below the treble staff or one ledger line above the bass staff, which is exactly where the two halves of a grand staff meet.

Guitar music is written in treble clef but sounds one octave lower than written. That is why the open low E string is written just below the third ledger line under the staff. If you write for guitar and piano together, keep this in mind: the same written note is an octave apart in sound.

Under the staff, tablature shows six lines, one per string, high E on top. A number is a fret, so a 3 on the fifth line from the top means the A string at the 3rd fret, a C.

How to use staff paper for dictation and composition

Blank paper is the best ear trainer there is, because nothing hides your mistakes. A dictation routine that works:

  1. Play or listen to a short phrase, four bars at most.
  2. Write the rhythm first, with slashes above the staff, using the time signature and drawing every bar line.
  3. Find the first note against a reference (a tuner tone or a key on a piano), then write each pitch by the interval from the previous one.
  4. Check by playing back what you wrote.

For composition, write the chord symbols above the staff before the melody. Knowing that bar 3 is an F and bar 4 a G tells you that F, A and C will sound strong in bar 3. Our online piano lets you test each line as you go.

Going further in the free workshop

If your page is mostly chords and lyrics rather than notes, a song chart is quicker than staff paper. With a free GuitarHarmony account, the songbook lets you write and save chord sheets with lyrics (up to 3 songs, with one PDF export every 30 days on the free plan). The guitar toolbox also prints blank fretboards, chord boxes and scale sheets, which pair well with a page of tab paper.

Blank staff paper itself stays on the public site, free and unlimited, with nothing to sign.

How to use it

  1. Pick the layout. Staff paper, staff + tab, tab only or grand staff. For guitar lessons, staff + tab is the most versatile.
  2. Choose the clef. Treble for guitar, voice, violin and the piano right hand; bass for bass guitar, cello and the left hand; no clef for a neutral sheet.
  3. Set staves and paper size. Fewer staves give more room for ledger lines and handwriting, more staves fit longer pieces. Pick A4 or US Letter to match your printer.
  4. Add a title and print. Turn on the title and composer lines if you want them, then download the PDF and print as many copies as you need.

What you can do with it

Teachers preparing lessons

Print a stack of staff + tab sheets: students write a major scale in notation and copy it into tab underneath, which links what they read to where it sits on the neck.

Students doing theory homework

Grand staff paper is the standard for four-part harmony and for spelling a chord in every inversion. Bass clef alone is ideal for practising bass lines.

Songwriters capturing ideas

Keep a few tab-only pages on the music stand. When a riff comes, write the frets first and the rhythm later, then try the chords from the guitar chord charts above it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the blank sheet music really free?

Yes. The generator is on the public site, needs no account and has no download limit. Print as many pages as you like, for yourself or your students.

Which clef should a guitarist use?

Treble clef. Guitar parts are written in treble clef and sound an octave lower than written. If you also want the string and fret, choose the staff + tab layout.

What is the difference between staff paper and a grand staff?

Staff paper repeats single five-line staves. A grand staff joins a treble staff and a bass staff with a brace, which is how piano music is written and how harmony exercises are usually set out.

Can I print on US Letter paper?

Yes. Choose A4 or US Letter before downloading so the margins and staff spacing fit your printer without scaling.

How many staves per page should I choose?

For beginners, children or music with many ledger lines, fewer staves give more space. For fast sketching or long pieces, choose more staves per page. Try one setting, print a test page and adjust.
